BSc BSc MSc MMACP MAACP HCPC MCSP

Rachel first qualified, from the University of Limerick, in Sport and Exercise Science in 2000.  During her degree she was awarded an academic scholarship in physiology  to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) for the year leading up to the Sydney Olympics. Rachel worked with Gold Medal athletes in rowing, swimming and cycling along with the Australian Football Team. From this experience Rachel became interested in a career in orthopaedic and sports physiotherapy. After qualifying from The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, she worked in the main Trauma Orthopaedic centre in Dublin becoming the Senior Physiotherapist in Orthopaedics.

Since moving to Cardiff in 2007, Rachel has completed both a Masters in Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy and the diploma in Acupuncture (AACP). In the last 10 years, working as the Senior Physiotherapist in Nuffield Cardiff Bay Hospital she has worked closely with many highly respected Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons updating best practice rehabilitation programmes for Back Pain, Spinal Surgery and Women’s Health.  She has also successfully treated many International Athletes in Hockey, Rugby, Tennis and Gymnastics.

As well as her love for orthopaedic and sports physiotherapy, Rachel has a passion for Women’s Health Physiotherapy. After having children of her own (now 8 and 6) she returned to sub-elite sport at a European Cup level as safely and quickly as possible. Therefore, she feels that every woman deserves the professional opinion of a Specialist Women’s Health physiotherapist when pelvic dysfunction may be a contributing factor in their musculoskeletal problems. Hence, if warranted she often combines specialist treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction with main stream musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice.   Within Women’s Health treatment Rachel also successfully treats different forms of incontinence and pelvic prolapse.

In her spare time, Rachel is the Lead Junior Hockey Coach for Penarth Ladies Hockey Club and plays for their 1st Team.  She has played in four European Hockey Club Championships.  As Lead Junior Coach, Rachel has lead the club in growing from 4 to 13 teams.  She joined Penarth Windsor Tennis Club two years ago and is working on her game to become a regular 1st team player. In Rachel’s youth she was a good golfer (7 handicap), while her dad,  Niall Brophy, was an  Irish 100m Sprint Record holder and is a two time British and Irish Lion (’59 and ’62).
