What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for common tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Deep tissue massage incorporates a combination of other techniques such as stretching, compression, frictions and trigger point therapy. Most in need of deep tissue massage are people with postural problems, repetitive strain injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion.

How Does Deep Tissue Massage Work?

When there is muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.   Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. The therapist will use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms during the deep tissue massage.   You may be asked to breathe deeply as the massage therapist works on certain tense areas.   This will soothe tired, aching muscles and ease tension.

It is important to drink plenty of water after the massage to flush metabolic waste from the tissues.   The massage will improve circulation, bringing fresh nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and soft tissue.   This technique can be particularly useful for promoting healing of injuries and reducing areas under repetitive strain.

Some of the benefits of deep tissue massage include:

• Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)

• Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome

• Improved postural problems

• Some relief from osteoarthritis pain and effects of fibromyalgia

• Release of muscle tension or spasm

• Improve circulation & lymphatic flow

• Assist in the removal of metabolic waste

• Assist in mental preparation for sporting participation

Precautions; Massage is not recommended for certain people:

•immediately after surgery and if you have a history of chronic heart problems

•immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor

•people with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before getting a massage

•people prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage

•pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a massage.

As this might affect the kind of treatment you can have, or on what areas of your body the therapist can work on. Deep tissue massage is also not recommended for people with acute or long-term mental health problems
